Excerpts from Pope Benedict's Homily for the Beatification of John Paul II.

Today is the Second Sunday of Easter, which Blessed John Paul II entitled Divine Mercy Sunday. The date was chosen for today's celebration because, in God's providence, my predecessor died on the vigil of this feast. Today is also the first day of May, Mary's month, and the liturgical memorial of Saint Joseph the Worker. All these elements serve to enrich our prayer, they help us in our pilgrimage through time and space; but in heaven a very different celebration is taking place among the angels and saints! Even so, God is but one, and one too is Christ the Lord, who like a bridge joins earth to heaven. At this moment we feel closer than ever, sharing as it were in the liturgy of heaven.

"Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe" (Jn 20:29). In today's Gospel Jesus proclaims this beatitude: the beatitude of faith. For us, it is particularly striking because we are gathered to celebrate a beatification, but even more so because today the one proclaimed blessed is a Pope, a Successor of Peter, one who was called to confirm his brethren in the faith. John Paul II is blessed because of his faith, a strong, generous and apostolic faith. We think at once of another beatitude: "Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven" (Mt 16:17). What did our heavenly Father reveal to Simon? That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Because of this faith, Simon becomes Peter, the rock on which Jesus can build his Church. The eternal beatitude of John Paul II, which today the Church rejoices to proclaim, is wholly contained in these sayings of Jesus: "Blessed are you, Simon" and "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe!" It is the beatitude of faith, which John Paul II also received as a gift from God the Father for the building up of Christ's Church.

In Loving Memory of Fr. Francis "Pete" Peterson

Francis Peterson was born on July 23, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA. He was ordained tot eh priesthood for the Diocese of Honolulu on May 14, 1960 at the Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, PA. Fr. Francis Peterson was a WW II vet and served the people in Hawaii for 51 years as a priest. His pastoral assignments were in various parishes in the Diocese of Honolulu and he affliated with St Francis medical Center and World Wide Marriage Encounter.

Fr. "Pete" had leukemia and on April 14, 2011, he died at Tripler Medical Center in Honolulu. Fr "Pete" offers himself beyond death and he has donated his body to the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Japan: Earthquake 2011

Pauline Books & Media and the Daughters of St. Paul offer resources on their website for those saddened by the destructive earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The prayers and reflections are available at no cost and can be used by groups, priests, individuals, and anyone seeking a way to help bring the needs of the victims to God. Resources for parents and teachers to use at home or in the classroom to help children understand this trauma are available for download.

We hope that this prayer experience will help people find peace during this terrible crisis. This prayers and resources section is available at www.pauline.org on the right-hand side of the home page.

We are grateful that our Sisters in Sendai and throughout Japan were personally unharmed by the tragic earthquake and tsunami. However, like so many others, they lost virtually everything but their lives in Sendai.

If you would like to be part of helping our Sisters in Japan rebuild their lives and the Pauline mission in this devastated area, a link for donations can be found on the home page of www.pauline.org. As the Daughters of St. Paul in Japan continue to share the Word of God and the Gospel of hope with our Japanese brothers and sisters, Christ will be made present to those who are suffering, and He will offer the consolation and peace only He can give.

Pauline Bookfair at Resurrection Parish!

For many ROL parishioners it's difficult to get downtown to the Pauline Bookstore. So, at the request of ROL parishioner and faithful customer, Gaylene Colon, the Daughters of Saint Paul brought the bookstore to Waipio. After each Mass last weekend Sister Linh and Sister An Mei offered an assortment of spiritual books, DVD's and rosaries for the parishioners of Resurrection of the Lord parish to view and purchase. We at ROL would like to thanks the Daughters of Saint Paul for their dedication and service in bringing the word of Our Lord, and the Catholic Church, to our Hawaiian Ohana. The Great Aloha Run 2011

Annually on Presidents' Day, the Great Aloha Run takes place in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The 8.15 miles (approx. 13 km) course starts in downtown Honolulu on Nimitz Highway across from Aloha Tower, and runs west on Nimitz Highway along Honolulu Harbor, under the Interstate H-1 viaduct near Honolulu International Airport, and along Kamehameha Highway, finishing on the floor of Aloha Stadium. The Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium route gives the race its name.

This year about 27,000 runners, 90% are Hawaii residents. This number also includes as many as 5,000 members of the United States Armed Forces who run in formation in the so-called "Sounds of Freedom" division.

There are about 19222 participants have finished the race. Srs. An Mei and Sr Gioan Linh joined Bishop Larry Silva and a group from the Diocese of Honolulu. The cause was to get pledges of prayers for the Akua Run/Walk for Vocations.

As Daughters of St Paul, we take every opportunity presents to us to build and to nurture our community life.
Today is Sr Lily's Birthday. So we take this beautiful occasion to pray and to celebrate with her. After we prayed our Christmas Novena, we went to our dining room and gave her a lei (as the Hawaiian Tradition), a card and a Birthday gift. We decided to sing and and cut the cake before we have our "dinner theatre". By request, we watched SISTER ACT!!!! We had such a good laughs!

"With Grateful Hearts" concert benefits the Seminarian Education Fund.Priests and Religious in the Diocese of Honolulu share their gifts and talents. Their voices resound throughout the Church! It was great to be at Sr Lily's Parish and for her to catch up with some old friends...Shanita. We also chatted with Jolynne, a young woman who is discerning her vocation with us.

We are blessed for the addition of two new members to our Honolulu community. These sisters are originally from Hawaii. Sr. Lily Duhaylonsod grew up in Ewa Beach and joined the Daughters of St. Paul 33 years ago. Sr. An Mei Lam entered from Honolulu 10 years ago. This is their first time being stationed in Hawaii. They are thrilled to be home and have this opportunity to serve the people of God in the islands of the Pacific.

Robert Louis Stevenson's Museum in Vailima,Samoa!

On my second trip to Samoa, I with some sisters are able to visit Robert Louis Stevenson's Museum in Vailima.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), Scottish poet, essayist, and author wrote Treasure Island (1883) and his study of split-personality, good versus evil in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).
Stevenson immersed himself in the local culture and politics of his new home, and continued his prodigious output of novels and letters. The Samoans bestowed the name "Tusitala" or "Teller of Tales" on him. Stevenson purchased four hundred acres that would be the setting for his mansion "Vailima" (Five Rivers) in the village of same name. Robert Louis Stevenson died of a stroke on 3 December 1894. The following words are inscribed on his tomb at Mount Vaea:

"Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you grave for me,
Here he lies where he longed to be.
Home is the sailor home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill

Two hundred years ago, King Kamehameha the Great brought the Hawaiian Islands together under a unified government. His courage and leadership earned him a legacy as the "Napoleon of the Pacific," and today his humanity is preserved in Ke Kanawai Mamalahoe, or "the Law of the Splintered Paddle." This law protects civilians in times of war and remains enshrined in Hawaii's constitution as "a unique and living symbol of the State's concern for public safety."

On this bicentennial King Kamehameha Day, we celebrate the history and heritage of the Aloha State, which has immeasurably enriched our national life and culture. The Hawaiian narrative is one of both profound triumph and, sadly, deep injustice. It is the story of Native Hawaiians oppressed by crippling disease, aborted treaties, and the eventual conquest of their sovereign kingdom. These grim milestones remind us of an unjust time in our history, as well as the many pitfalls in our Nation's long and difficult journey to perfect itself. Yet, through the peaks and valleys of our American story, Hawaii's steadfast sense of community and mutual support shows the progress that results when we are united in a spirit of limitless possibility.

In the decades since their persecution, Native Hawaiians have remained resilient. They are part of the diverse people of Hawaii who, as children of pioneers and immigrants from around the world, carry on the unique cultures and traditions of their forebears. As Americans, we can all admire these traits, as well as the raw natural beauty of the islands themselves. Truly, the Aloha Spirit of Hawaii echoes the American Spirit, representing the opportunities we all have to grow and learn from one another as we carry our Nation toward a brighter day.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 11, 2010, as King Kamehameha Day. Fr. Peter is serving on the neighbor island of Kauai at St Catherine's Parish. Fr. Smart recently graduated from Catholic University and is on his way home to his diocese in Zambia.

Corpus Christi Sunday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church

Aloha! For Corpus Christi Sunday, we had the joy of conducting a Parish Book Fair at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, situated on the North Shore at the foot of the luxurious mountain range,Kualoa Pt. and within view of the aqua marine Hawaiian waters. Fr. Paulo Kosaka, OFM Cap., was very gracious to invite us! Mahalo Fr. Paulo!

The Parish has a very strong community spirit, so after both Masses everyone came over to the pavilion for fellowship, food and the Pauline Book Fair, and also to see Theresa Wong's selective religious statues.
Sr Gioan Linh, as soon as she saw the fish soup, she said,"This soup reminds me of my mom's cooking." Later on she met and chatted with(Rose) Hong Matsuzaki who is from Viet-Nam.

The new book "St Joseph: Help for Life's Emergencies" was a best seller! Other Daughters of St Paul hot items were music such as Catholic Favorites vol. 1, Celebrating 20 Years, and Mary Did you Know. And for the many children, colring books were the favorite pick for summer fun.
May God bless in a special way all the parishioners at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel! Mahalo!

First Friday Honolulu Gallery Walk

Check out the most exciting event to hit downtown Honolulu on the first Friday of every month! Chinatown is transforms into a place for those who wants to be the hip crowds at the many unique galleries, boutiques, cafes and restaurants that feature exciting art exhibits and free entertainment.

On this first Friday, June 4, 2010, Srs. Susan John and Gioan Linh join the Honolulu Gallery walk. We walk down to the Hawai`i State Art Museum to see the "Aerial Romance". It features a line-up of Jazz musicians Jeff Peterson, Steve Jones and Von Baron, with vocalists Starr Kalahiki, Rocky Brown, and trumpeter DeShannon Higa. The artistis set the stage for the premier aerial dance of Samadhi Hawaii, suspended from the trees on the Lawn

Samadhi Hawaii was founded on Maui in 2004 by ‘Ulalena original cast/ aerialist Andrea Torres, with Ana Prada, Marcus Quiniones and Yayoi Hara. An Aerial Dance Performance Troupe made in Hawaii!! Aerial dance takes the grace and precision of ballet, the flexibility of yoga and the whole-body strength, balance and technique of an acrobat. One of the performer is from Paris, France. Anasma did a Puja Dance. It was incredible!

Rocky Brown has performed at Carnegie Hall, been featured with the Honolulu Symphony, and performed with Philippine’s well renowned singer/songwriter Jose Marie Chan at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.

With this experience, we want to keep learning about life itself and the art of living. We are being inculturated.

Closing of the Year of the Priest

This evening the Diocese of Honolulu celebrated the close of the Year of the Priest with a special Holy Hour and Mass.
Bishop Larry silva was joined by many priests of the island of Oahu, seminarians, religious, and faithful. He encouraged his priests to continue to live in service of God and the people with loving generosity. Mahalo to the Serra Club members who organize the event.

Lantern Floating-Memorial Day 2010

Memorial Day celebrations are unique in Honolulu. Besides the remembrances at Punchbowl Military Cemetery with the leis draped on each grave, the military jet fly over salute, the day ends with an ancient Japanese lantern floating ceremony.
The lanterns are set afloat with prayers representing our affection for the deceased. There are about 40,000 thousands people gather at Ala Moana Beach Park for yesterday's evening Lantern Floating Ceremony. The ceremony remembers those who gave their lives in conflict, allows for reflection on the memories of loved ones and dedicates prayers for a peaceful and harmonious future. Just as the waters of the Pacific merge with each ocean, the wish for peace and happiness extends from Hawaii across the globe. Memorial Day at Punchbowl National Cemetery

Today is Memorial Day in which our nation set aside to honor the memory of the men and women who died fighting in the United States armed forces. Memorial Day is typically observed by placing flags and flowers on graves and tossing flowers in the water to honor those who died at sea.

Here in Hawaii, the general public donate leis for Memorial Day.
Every year on Memorial Day fifty thousand fresh flower leis are placed on the graves of veterans at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu and at other veterans' cemeteries on Oahu and the outer islands. The donated leis are made of ti leaves or fresh flowers that measure 20 to 24 inches.

On May 22 and 23, Sr An Mei had a Pauline Bookfair at St Therese in Kihei (Maui). Inside the Church, there is a beautiful crucifix with Jesus in local Hawaiian clothe with the description "O Iesu No Nazareta Ke Alii O Na Iudaio" The music for the Sunday evening was pretty lively. It draws so many young people to worship. It's wonderful to be able to travel and to share the Word of God to our brothers and sisters on the island of Maui! Mahalo Sr An Mei!

Bonita, a parishioner at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, was so gracious to come for a couple of hours to share her gift and expertise with in the Art of Japanese clay flower making. We gathered in our dining room with the fan humming over our heads and the tropical breeze blowing through the open window (our A/C died last night). Observe as the sisters make their first attempt to create roses, plumerias, leaves, etc..and a few bloopers! Mahalo to Bonita!

On Saturday, May 22, 2010, Sr. An Mei and I left Oahu for Maui. The cheapest flight was at 5:22am. When we got to Kahului Airport, we were picked up by Sr. Candelaria. Between the two of us, we each take care of a parish. Sr Candie helps Sr An Mei at St Therese in Kihei and Sr Angie, helps me at Christ the King. The people of Maui are very hospitable.

On this Pentecost Sunday, the Church was decorated beautifully with red banners and flowers. Before each Mass, the various choirs process up with white roses and presented to Mary.

Feast of Mary, Queen of Apostles!

The small Daughters of St Paul community of Hawaii celebrated the Feast of Mary Queen of Apostles with friends and cooperators. Fr. Jim, in residence at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, came over to celebrate the Mass in honor of our Queen. In his homily, Father mentioned the important role Mary has in each of our lives-that giving Jesus to us and to the world.

After Mass, we all gathered in the community dining room for a potluck meal, hawaiian style, topped off with home made cookies. We all enjoyed sharing stories and feeling that we are united in vorious way to the Pauline "Ohana."

Last night at 10:30pm the phone rang. "Hello, Daughters of St Paul." "Oh I missed the flight and got stuck at the airport. Can I stay at your place?" Half asleep I was trying to listen carefully to the person on the other line. The voice sounds familiar. Oh it's Sr Lydia, a Notre Dame sister from Guam who is on her way to the mainland.
I rushed to the airport and found out that I could not stay at the curve for long. I made three rounds. There's no sight of Sr Lydia. Then I asked myself "was that phone call for real...or was I dreaming?" Thank goodness, I decided to go to the Departure section to see if I can get a glimpse of Sr Lydia. Sure enough, she was there. At last...I was not dreaming. It's for REAL!
Then wouldn't you know..4:30am came so sudden. That's when we drop Sr Lydia off to the airport. Even though it was a brief encounter with Sr Lydia, it's always a joy to be able to share the Aloha spirit! And our God is a God of surprises!

Sr Gioan Linh packed some boxes for this coming weekends to Maui. She and Sr. An mei will be at St Theresa in Kihei and Christ the King in Kahului for parish exhibits.
The words of St Paul come to mind in preparation for this trip to the neighboring island of Maui.

"God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in proclaiming the gospel of his Son, that I remember you constantly, always asking in my prayers that somehow by God's will I may at last find my way clear to come to you. The local superiors and representatives of the various religious congregations in the Diocese of Honolulu gather at St Stephen Diocesan Center for our quarterly meeting. With the help of Deacon John Coughlin who sets up the conference call via internet, the sisters, fathers and brothers from Hilo, Big Island were able to participate in the meeting.
Fr. David,OSB welcome everyone and Sr. Patty,CSJ led the opening prayer. Br. Dennis, SM updates us on the Vocation Forum. Sr. Patty continues with the evaluation of the Diocesan Jubilee Celebration. Part of the agenda is for me to show our Pauline Books & Media Blog (http://pbmhonolulu.blogspot.com). I share with the members a little bit how the blog works. Some already ask, "When will you give the class on how to create a blog?" There are a lot of interests in this area. So we are hoping to give a workshop to parishes, religious communities in the fall. This is a great way to build unity, community and communion.
We also review the draft of LARC Bylaws. Our next meeting will be August 24, 2010.

Successful Movie Event by Cathedral's Youth & Young Adults

Close to 70 eager people packed into the Kamiano Center this past Sat.night to watch the latest film on Fatima: “The 13th Day.” The film was being shown by the youth of the Cathedral as a fundraising event, hopefully the first of many, to raise money for their many activities. Young and old alike purchased their popcorn and soda from the youth, and then quickly seated themselves to watch this latest film on the Miracle of Fatima.

The film is based on the memoirs of the oldest seer, Lucia Santos, as well many thousands of independent eyewitness accounts. “The 13th Day” by Ian and Dominic Higgins, dramatizes the true story of the three young shepherds who experienced six apparitions with a “Lady from heaven” between May and October, 1917 and culminates in the foretold “miracle of the sun” witnessed by 70,000 people.

The children suffered much over the course of the months of “visits” from the Lady, who later revealed herself to be the Blessed Virgin, but they remained true to her, to their story, and to their promise to suffer and pray for the conversion of sinners. All three Seers have since died, the most recent being Lucia in 2005, and two of them have been beatified: Francisco and Jacinta Marto.

First Communion at St Michael Church

The twelve young men and women make their First Communion at St Michael's Church in Waialua. The Church was established in 1853 and the school in 1944. Maggie Coyle invites us for her First Communion. Fr. Bertram Lock, a Sacred Hearts Father, celebrates the Sacred Liturgy. As he delivers his homily, Fr Bertram asks the all present, especially the children,"Where are your hands? Where are your feet?" Then he goes on to say, "You are Christ's hands and feet reaching out to others."
The students at St Michael's School enhanced the Liturgy through their enthusiastic and joyful voices with hymns of praise.
The celebration continues to Maggie's home at Schofield Barracks for lunch. As we chat with her grandmother who visiting from Texas, we notice that the house is being filled quickly with friends and neighbors. Maggie's grandmother made her Communion dress and cake.

Feast Day of St Damien deVeuster

May 10,2010 is the first Feast Day of St. Damien de Veuster.

This morning we gather with the Sacred Hearts Fathers, Brothers, Sisters and students from various Catholic Schools at the state capitol to celebrate the Feast of St. Damien deVeuster.

The program includes a welcome by Sacred Hearts Fr Lane Akiona, a song "Hawaii Ponoi" performed by Maryknoll School students, an invocation by Fr. Marc Alexander, a Scripture reading, a reflection by Sacred Hearts Father Herman Gomes, a hula by students from Sacred Hearts Academy, the draping of the statue with leis, the singing of Hawaii Aloha, and a benediction by Sacred Hearts Father Christopher Keahi.
In the reflection given by Fr. Herman Gomes, he challenges all present and especially all the students to be "Agent of Transformation, Agent of Love" as St Damien was.
We will continue our celebration with the Sacred Liturgy at Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. Bishop Larry will be the main celebrant at the 6pm Mass.

Celebrating Mother's Day at Schofield Barracks

Mahalo to the Endres' family for inviting us to their new place in Schofield Barracks on Mother's Day!

Schofield Barracks occupies some 17,725 acres on Central Oʻahu. The base was established in 1908 to provide mobile defense of Pearl Harbor and the entire island. It has been the home of the 25th Infantry Division, known as the Tropic Lightning Division, since 1941 as well as the Command Headquarters for United States Army Hawaii (USARHAW). Schofield Barracks is also home to the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

We're blessed to have met two other families. There are about 11 children running around. A few older ones remember Sr Linh at the Pauline Bookfair at St Michael School a couple of months ago. As soon as we sat down, Savannah, a fifth grader, approaches each of us for an "interview." She made a list of questions the evening before we came. She was very delightful to talk to. Sr Laura and I are very impressed with how the parents nurture, love and care for their children. We can see that for these families, to nurture their faith is important. Traditionally, they gather together for dinner and "family" Rosary on Sunday evening. That's exactly what we did this evening. We pray the Rosary before we depart!
Riz and Brad will be deployed soon and Ryan is already oversea. Let us continue to pray for these families and those around the world. In a special way on Mother's Day, let us pray for all mothers.

150th Anniversary and Perpetual Profession of Sr Ivy Yim

To conclude the year of their 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Sacred Hearts Sisters in Hawaii (May 4, 1859)and the Perpetual Profession of Sr. Ivy Yim,we are invited to St. Patrick's Church for a 9:30am celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy. Fr. Christopher Keahi, the Provincial Superior of the Sacred Hearts Fathers and Brothers, with Fr. Marc Alexander and other priests celebrate the Sacred Liturgy. Sr. Ivy's family came from Hong Kong for this special occasion.
After Mass, we continue our celebration with a reception at the Ala Moana Hotel. The highlight here was the dragon dance (picture). Among the many people present at the reception, I spotted Sr. An Mei's mom(picture).

We rejoice with the Sacred Hearts Sisters as they continue to celebrate the legacy left to them by those Sisters who came to Hawaii in answer to the call to contemplate, live and proclaim the redeeeming love of God.

Adolescent Faith Formation by Dr. Scott Miller

Lisa Gomes, the Director of Youths and Young Adults in Hawaii invites Dr. Scott Miller, Interim Director/Coodinator for the Adolescent Faith Formation-Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore to share his knowledge with youth ministry leaders in the Diocese of Honolulu. We gather at St Elizabeth in Aiea from 7-8:30pm. Times are changing on Adolescent Catechesis; a new morning is upon us. His presentation helps us to look onto the horizon regarding what the new day brings to us who aspire to bring the Good News to our young people.
Dr. Miller presents to us the 4 Cs: context, content, communion and conspire.

Before Sr Laura and I went to St Elizabeth for the presentation by Dr. Scott Miller, I attend our Youth and Young Adults meeting at Kamiano Center. Those present at the meeting put together some informations about Our Lady of Fatima. Ashley, one of our Youth, shares with us the picture of the children of Fatima that she drew! We also prepare the Sunday announcement for next saturday event. The announcement goes like this:

An Encounter with New Friends

Fr. McCormick’s retirement celebration continues---
As we were leaving Fr McCormick’s party on Sunday evening two retired navy officers stopped us- Jerry and Stewart. Both were out-of-town friends of Father who had flown in for the celebration. “Sisters, what order do you belong to? How do you know Fr. Pat?” and so began their numerous questions about our life as sisters, our faith, and why we “do what we do!” The conversation continued as Jerry, plate in hand, sat down at a near by table to finally eat, and we joined him, as well as Stewart and now, Fr Pat. The conversation was not one-sided for we too, heard many interesting stories about the navy, like how they bury the dead at sea, celebrate Mass on an aircraft carrier on a Sunday morning between “take offs” and “landings,” -it was all quite amazing and fascinating, to say the least….I guess there are similarities between the military and religious life!
And the conversation continued when they stopped by our Bookcenter two days later to get some “food for the soul” in the form of books and CD’s for their journey home. Stewart stocked up on apologetics and Jerry, I forget what! But both of these men were “sincere seekers” with a thirst to know the truth and to follow the Lord. And for me, that means everything.

Hawaii’s Catholic priests together with Bishop Larry Silva gather at Turtle Bay Resort, north shore of Oahu for the 2010 Priests’ Convocation.

The convocation’s theme is “Do This in Memory of Me: Renewing the Spirituality of Priesthood.” The convocation is not a retreat. Therefore, annual spiritual retreat is required of all priests.

The Office of Clergy has asked Pauline Books and Media to have an exhibit of books, CD, and DVD for the priests. Early this morning, the drive from downtown Honolulu to North Shore was beautiful. Many of the priests express their appreciation of our presence and mission here in Hawaii. The day seems full with 9am morning prayer, sessions, 11:30am Mass and 5pm evening prayer. Fr. Cletus(pictured)was the main Celebrant for today's Sacred Liturgy. For morning and evening prayer, we pray the Liturgy of the Hours. What is the Liturgy of the Hours? The Liturgy of the Hours is an ancient and beautiful prayer that unites us to the entire church and is as relevant today as it was in the first centuries of the church.

Let us continue to pray for our priests.

On Saturday morning, Barbara and Lawrence walked into our Pauline Books and Media on Bishop Street. He introduces himself as Br. Pascual's brother. Br. Pascual who lives in Canfield, OH is a member of the Society of St Paul. Who are the Society of St. Paul? Our Founder, Blessed James Alberione founded the Society of St Paul in 1914 and the Daughters of St Paul in 1915. This is how the Society of St Paul describes themselves:

The Society of St. Paul is a religious congregation in the Catholic Church made up of brothers and priests dedicated to using the media to bring Christ to the world. The vision started at the beginning of this century and will be valid through the next millennium. Consecrated men are needed for the arduous global media ministry.
Working together with the whole Pauline Family the brothers and priests strive to be lights for the good news. They speak a word of conscience to the world and address the needs of the human spirit and the soul of the world's cultures. A story of a Blind Girl with Beethoven

There was a blind girl who could not see the beauties of a moonlit night. She missed the silver sheen on trees and shrubs and grass; she could not imagine the world of milky white in the sky. A composer wanted to make this blind girl "see" and feel the moonlit night. So he created a beautiful piece of music which is now a masterpiece. The considerate and selfless composer was Beethoven and the piece of music he created is the well-known "Moonlight Sonata."

Preparation for the Diocesan Jubilee Celebration

In preparation for the Jubilee celebration of our diocesan priests, consecrated men and women, a group of sisters from various congregations together with some friends gather at the Co-Cathedral of St Theresa on Friday evening to decorate the tables for the reception tomorrow. The expectant number is over 500 peoples for the Mass and reception.
Sr. Laura Brown, a member of the Daughters of St Paul, is celebrating her Silver Jubilee. Some Pauline Cooperators and friends will be there to celebrate with her.

The students at St. Francis School made a Thousand Origami Cranes. 千羽鶴, Senbazuru (Thousand origami Cranes) is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings.

An ancient Japanese believe that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will have a long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures (others include the dragon and the tortoise), and is said to live for a thousand years. In Asia, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true. This makes them popular gifts for special friends and family.

She uses the movie "Entertaining Angels"-The Dorothy Day Story for these 2 days retreat.

The Filipino Catholic Club sponsored a Class on News Writing by Patrick Downes,an editor of Hawaii Catholic Herald on Tuesday April 27 at St. Elizabeth Church Hall from 6:30-8:00 pm. The parishioners from various Churches participated in this free lecture.

Patrick, who works as editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald for 28 years, starts the class with the introduction and then proceeds to ask the participants the following questions: "Why do you want to send stories to the media?" And "what is news?" Those present also learn the basics of writing a news story.

On April 25, 2010, at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe,Hawaii, Commander Patrick J. McCormick retires from active duty in the United States Navy. After 20 years of pastoral service to the men and women in the armed forces, Fr. McCormick enjoys the presence of family and friends who gather together for the Sacred Liturgy and for the military ceremony of retirement. A young man says, "Not every day that you get to experience such momentous ceremony." His pastoral and gentle presence touches many lives. He will be missed.

We gathered at 1pm at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace to pray for peace and to pray for our brothers and sisters in need especially the homeless in Downtown Honolulu and Chinatown. Then we walked from the Cathedral to the future location where we hope to have affordable homes for our brothers and sisters. Mayor Mufi and Lt. Governor Aiona were among those at prayer.

Statue of Mother Marianne Cope

The statue of Blessed Marianne Cope was officially dedicated by Bishop Larry Silva on January 23, 2010, Mother Marianne's birthday and feastday. The statue, which faces toward Molokai, was placed at Kewalo Basin. She and other sisters went to Molokai in 1888 to continue the work of Father Damien De Veuster at the Kalaupapa peninsula settlement.

During my studies as an undergrad at UNC and then afterwards working as a Clinical Dietitian in New Orleans, my faith life grew. I frequented daily Mass, said the rosary and went to Confession regularly. While working as a Dietitian I began to desire more. Giving persons diet instructions and teaching them about nutrition soon seemed unimportant and even superficial. Did they know Christ? Did they know the difference he makes in one’s life? I found myself asking Jesus how I might serve Him best, how I might aid persons in their own quest, in their own lives of faith. And this question led me to my community- the Daughters of St Paul whose mission it is to proclaim Christ through the media, that is to aid persons in their own “faith searches” in and through the media.

A story was told about a British poet, George Herbert. One day he was hastening to a musical concert. On the street he saw a poor "huckster" whose horse had fallen under its heavy load. George stopped to help unload the horse, get it to its feet and then reload. He then gave some money to buy food for the horse and its owner.
When he reached the concert hall, his friends were shocked to see his dirtied and disarrayed clothes. An attorney in a rush to make a court appointment to file legal papers involving a multi-million dollar trust accidentally collides with an alcoholic insurance salesman, who also is a rush for a court appointment involving the custody of his children. The attorney leaves the scene of the accident and strands the salesman, causing him to miss his custody hearing. During the process of the post-crash discussion, the attorney accidentally drops the papers he needs to present in court. The judge gives him until the end of the day to present the papers and thus begins a cat and mouse game between the proponents. A few questionable actions later on both parties' part, they finally start questioning their actions and their lives. Early on Holy Saturday morning, April 3, 2010, Mr. Pietro Molla, husband of St. Gianna Beretta Molla, died in his family home in Mesero, near Milan in Italy. His daughters and son , Gianna Emanuela, Pierluigi and Laura were at his side. He will be buried in the town cemetery, next to the tomb of St. Gianna Beretta Molla.
